The Rector Writes – a busy month – Open-air Service & BBQ; Gift Day; “Come & C” & Full Attendance Sunday

In most spheres of life it is traditional for the month of September to be a busy one. Although it is an opportunity for some to get away to sunnier places with a view to shortening the winter, it marks the end of the summer holidays for most when schools and colleges begin their new academic year. As the evenings get darker, adult education night classes recommence and many indoor sports begin their new season. Here in Tullow is no exception and in fact, this September promises to be a very busy one indeed!

On Sunday 6th September we will once again be joining with our friends from Kilternan Parish for an Open-Air Service followed by a bring your own picnic at Newgrange, Barnaslinghan Lane, Kilternan. This is the former home of the late Frank Johnson and we are once again indebted to the Johnson family for their kind invitation. As a mark of appreciation for all that Frank did for Tullow parish it would be great to see good turnout of families for this enjoyable event. In addition, it will also afford an opportunity to say ‘bon voyage’ to Canon David Moynan and his wife Isobel as they leave for New Zealand at the end of the month.

On Saturday 12th September, a small group from the parish will participate in a diocesan initiative entitled ‘Come ‘n’ C’. This is a follow up to a Diocesan Growth Forum which was held three years ago in 2012. However, it is envisaged that this time it will be broadened out to involve more parishioners as further events will be planned at a Rural Deanery basis before the middle of October. There will be more about this initiative anon.

Sunday 13th September will be a ‘Full Attendance’ day at our main 10:30am mid-morning Service. This will be an occasion for all parishioners to see for themselves what Tullow has to offer both in terms of worship as well as sporting and social outreach for all ages. The success of this occasion is very much dependent on the level of support it receives.

Finally, Sunday 20th September has been designated our parish Gift Day. Although there are not any specific events planned for the day itself, it is hoped that the day will become a focus for our parish gift giving which may be offered throughout the month of September and beyond.

 With every blessing, John.
