Badminton – shifty foot-work, booze and new tricks for old dogs!

The Club had a busy December before the seasonal break, with the Xmas tournament and then the Annual get-together. In theory everyone had a fair chance to win, with the losers in the first rounds going on to the ‘plate’ competition where Ashlyn & David won a hard fought final game against Mandy & Neil 21-17.

In the main competition Michael & Jane had looked a good bet in their first match, until Michael suspiciously failed to perform in their semi-finals against the eventual winners. This was doubly surprising when a claim was made that Vera had also been nobbled in an earlier game. A very close eye was kept on the final for any further sign of funny-business but even so that shifty pair of Jonathan & Noel managed to win by 21-15, notwithstanding a great team effort by Heather & Alan.

The Annual get-together on the following night in Chez Cooper was a wonderful night, with a delicious meal, a surfeit of wine and excellent company. Having found no evidence to the contrary the prizegiving – deferred from the previous night – took place late in the evening and the first prize was awarded to the aforesaid Jonathan & Noel.

2016 started well, with a large turnout and we were particularly pleased to welcome two new members; plus of course the very welcome return appearances from the man in white, who showed us a few tricks even he had forgotten he had !
